How To Use Site

I am the numbers guy at LinkedIn in Mountain View, CA, where I devise and implement various statistical methods to help improve the world of online professional networking. I maintain and (when I have time) develop TeamRankings.com, a sports power ratings web site. Whether or not I have time, I always make sure to beat my body up as much as possible with squash, running, cycling, and soccer.

To check out my web site, click here. If you'd like to get in contact with me, you can email me. If you have any cool data sets you're working with, feel free to shoot me an email. For some strange reason, working with numbers is something I really enjoy doing. No doubt that comes as a surprise, given my job and my hobbies :)

A superficial bio:

  1978, born in Philadelphia, PA.

1986-1996, went to Germantown Friends School (GFS) in Philadelphia (where many insisted on calling me "Mikey Greenfield" for a few too many years). I won two athletic awards in high school (one for soccer and one for tennis), and I like to brag in jest about how that compares favorably to the zero academic awards that GFS gave me. Much as it pains me to say it, I'm probably more of a nerd than a jock.

1996-2000, attended Stanford University. I graduated with a B.S. in Mathematical and Computational Science. In 1998 I spent a term at the University of Melbourne in Australia. Much of my two final years were spent playing squash, and I take a lot of pride in what the club team at Stanford has accomplished since it was founded in 1998.

1999, I interned at Hewlett-Packard in Mountain View, building tools to analyze web activity logs.

2000, went live with TeamRankings. It's still a work in progress, and the rankings I devised in college aren't as sophisticated as what I would develop if I were to do it all over today, but I'm grateful for the success the site has achieved.

2000, worked for eight months at Xamplify in Berkeley, California.

2001-02 and 2002-03, I served as Stanford's women's squash coach.

2000-2004, was Sr Fraud R&D Scientist at PayPal, where I built predictive statistical models to make life difficult for the fraudsters of the world.

I currently serve as the Goldsmith Greenfield Foundation representative for the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, an annual award given by the Shorenstein Center at Harvard University.

At your own risk, feel free to check out some pictures of me with friends, family, dogs, etc.

Once again, for the search engines, my name is in fact Mike Greenfield, though my full name is Michael Greenfield, or Michael William Greenfield :)
